Before I opened my in-home daycare, I was a new college graduate with a Mathematics degree and a five-month-old. My husband, a physical education teacher, was our rock during my final semester of college. Finding a job in finance or science was easy, but the real challenge was finding childcare. There was a crisis in Kansas regarding child care that I was completely unaware of when it came to infants. I toured various in-home daycares and facilities, but unfortunately, the waitlist for infants was extensive, meaning we would likely be waiting a year or two to find a position in 2022.
With my years of childcare and education experience during high school and college, my husband jokingly suggested I open an in-home program. I told him no way! After a month of research and reading regulations—because I don’t proceed without thorough research, emails, phone calls, and so on—I decided to license our house as an in-home childcare business.
Obtaining the license for our newly renovated home was challenging, especially with a tight budget! Purchasing baby gates, child locks, and all the other necessities was no easy feat on a single income, but we made do as best we could. Coordinating appointments with KDHE and the fire marshal and creating a comprehensive business plan while caring for a newborn proved challenging. My family was incredibly supportive during this time.
Fast-forward to the present, my husband and I are collaborating to create a thriving academic program. Over the last three years, we have developed an outstanding program and a clear vision of how we want it to benefit our kids. Specifically, we aim to deliver the curriculum in the most enjoyable way possible for children.
We aim to create a fully immersive experience for children, starting when they enter the building and continuing as they transitions throughout their daily schedule. Our children's minds are active, and we must address their social, physical, and sensory needs.
We are excited to engage in hands-on STEM projects and provide demonstrations to enhance our students' understanding of STEM's impact on society.

As parents, we prioritize staying informed throughout the day. I can't go through my day without knowing how my daughter is doing. We receive updates through the Brightwheel application, where providers log everything as we interact with the kids.
This will include diaper changes, feedings, and meals, as well as a summary of our activities and any changes. I want the parents to stay informed about what is happening. An announcement will be sent out along with the billing statements.
Nutritious meals will be prepared and cooked on-site, including breakfast, a morning snack, lunch, and an afternoon snack. Menus will be available on Brightwheel.
We appreciate you informing us about your child's anticipated absence before the week begins so we can prepare the necessary food. We are doing what we can to cut down on food waste.

Please email us to schedule a tour based on our current availability. Tours typically take place in the evenings, starting at 5:00 PM. We want to emphasize that significant time and effort go into preparing for these tours after daycare hours, which can disrupt our family’s evening routine.
Please ensure that the hours of 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM work for you, review our rate, and read our handbook/contract thoroughly beforehand. Our scheduling times, handbook, and contract are firm. Please note that rescheduling a tour more than once may impact our available positions. Thank you for your understanding.

Infant Care Practices
Diapering: Procedures must be posted in changing areas away from food prep, and a covered, hands-free trash container must be provided. Changing tables require safety straps, which must be cleaned after each use.
Formula: Refrigerate prepared formula in a covered nipple, labeled with the child’s name, contents, and preparation time/date, to be used within 24 hours. Discard unfinished bottles an hour after feeding.
Breastmilk: Label all breast milk with the child’s name and express time/date. Unfrozen breast milk lasts 96 hours in the fridge, frozen lasts 6 months, and must be consumed within 24 hours of thawing. Discard unfinished bottles after two hours. On-site breastfeeding space is provided.
Safe Sleep Policy: Children must have a supervised rest period daily.
Children over 12 months old sleep on cots. Children under 12 months nap in cribs or playpens on their backs; they may choose their sleeping position when able to turn over. No wedges or positioners should be used. Cribs and playpens must be free of soft items like pillows and toys. Instead of a blanket, children may wear sleep clothing.
Napping and Sleeping Surfaces: Each child receives clean, individual bedding. Napping surfaces must be clean, safe, and in good repair, adhering to age, height, and weight specifications. We follow the Manufacturer’s instructions for the Pack' n Plays. Cots and playpens must have firm, fitted mattresses, with the mattress at its lowest position when a child can sit up or stand. All bedding must be stored clean and sanitary when not in use.
Toddler Care Practices
Diapering: Procedures must be posted in changing areas away from food prep, and a covered, hands-free trash container must be provided. Changing tables require safety straps, which must be cleaned after each use.
Bathroom Training: We offer potty training camps a few times a year to build a partnership with parents, as it requires significant effort at home and school. This program is for older children. Both parties must agree that the child shows signs of readiness and has the necessary maturity, starting at 2 years old.
Meals: Nutritious meals, including breakfast, a morning snack, lunch, and an afternoon snack, will be prepared and cooked on-site. Menus will be available on Brightwheel.

Abuse in all forms is unacceptable and prohibited in my facility. Training is provided to recognize signs of abuse, and I will document any suspected incidents. As a mandated reporter, I am required by law to report any suspicions of neglect or abuse.
If a child is injured, the provider will assess the situation, provide first aid, and contact the parent for stable injuries that need medical attention. For life-threatening injuries, first aid will be given, 911 will be called, and parents will be notified. A provider will accompany the child to the hospital if an ambulance is needed.
Biting Policy:
Biting can occur among young children, often due to reasons like experimentation, jealousy, or frustration. When a biting incident happens, I act quickly to address the situation. I remove the child who bit, help the bitten child, and explain that "biting hurts."
Procedure for Notifying Parents:
Parents of the bitten child will be informed with details and a photo of the bite mark, though we cannot identify the child who bit due to privacy concerns. We will also notify the parents of the biting child without sharing the photo. A plan will be created to address the behavior. If biting continues, we may have to terminate enrollment for safety. Monitoring will be increased during free play, and if there’s no improvement, a different daycare may be suggested.
We are a private childcare business, and vaccinations are mandatory. We do not accept delays or waivers. Please send us your child's immunization records after each doctor's appointment where they receive vaccinations. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) conducts unexpected inspections, so we need to keep our records up-to-date. We recommend scheduling immunizations at the end of the day since children cannot return to daycare the same day due to potential reactions. This also applies to blood tests and allergy appointments. We appreciate your cooperation!
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in several areas, including employment, transportation, public accommodations, communications, and access to state and local government programs and services.
Guidelines for Releasing Children: I will only release your child to their parent or legal guardian. If someone else needs to pick them up, please send a message on Brightwheel with their name from the pre-authorized list. More than simply informing me at drop-off is required.
Each authorized person must provide their contact information, address, vehicle ID, and a photocopy of a government-issued ID (such as a driver's license). I will verify their ID before release. Please explain this policy to anyone picking up your child; it is for their safety.
If your family is experiencing a divorce or any legal changes affecting custody, please inform me immediately and provide any necessary legal documents indicating who cannot pick up your child.
All family-related information will be kept confidential except as required by law or with written consent. Caregivers and teachers must not share personal details about children and families with unauthorized individuals. Confidential information should only be accessed by staff who need it for services and should not be discussed in front of others in the facility.
O’Barto’s Childcare Rules:
Prohibited behaviors include: - Hitting, pinching, biting, pushing, hair-pulling, and breaking things.
- Running, jumping, wrestling, or climbing on furniture indoors.
- Picking up babies or toddlers, or leaving the house/yard without an adult.
- Climbing trees or being in the front yard/driveway without supervision.
- Name-calling, yelling, foul language, and teasing. Respect is mandatory. Shoes must be removed in the carpet area, and socks are required. Children must wash their hands after coughing or sneezing and before and after meals or outdoor play.
Discipline / Behavior Policy:
I address harmful offenses by removing the child and redirecting their attention while explaining appropriate behaviors, especially to children over two. I take harmful actions seriously and encourage apologies when fitting. If behaviors persist, I may terminate enrollment to ensure all children's safety. Physical punishment by parents, including grabbing, smacking, or hitting, is prohibited on my premises.
To maintain our schedule, visits are limited to parents during pick-up and drop-off. Our no-visitors policy applies to anyone other than parents and guardians since all visitors must pass extensive background checks, which can take months. When we started our daycare, we anticipated family members assisting with field trips and added them to our KDHE affiliates list after approved background checks.
Tips for smooth transitions at Drop-Off and Pick-Up:
Transition times can be challenging depending on the child's age and development. Parents should comfort their child with positive affirmations and avoid showing reluctance, as this may worsen the situation. Establishing a consistent routine helps. The caregiver will manage diapers and necessary supplies during these times.
For Pick-up/Drop-off:
Please do not enter the licensed childcare area. We will meet you at the French doors. This reduces crowding and keeps outside particles out. Use Brightwheel for important updates before drop-off; we'll inform you about meals, diaper changes, and naps throughout the day.
Late Attendance:
If your child will be late, please message me via Brightwheel or email the night before. Late arrivals can disrupt routine. If dropping off after 8:00 AM, ensure your child has had breakfast since we finish serving by then. Thank you! Please schedule appointments near the end of the day. If you need to pick up early, do so before lunch or after a nap, as children cannot return after appointments. Avoid picking them up during nap times for uninterrupted sleep. If picking up early, please do so at least 30 minutes before nap time starts. Thank you!
O’Barto’s Childcare is committed to following the Kansas Act Against Discrimination, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion (creed), gender, gender expression, age, national origin (ancestry), disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status. We strive to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for all our staff, the children and families we serve, and our volunteers.
I am completely committed to this for the children. As a parent, I want the best for my children, and I will do everything I can to ensure they receive proper care, education, and experiences. Our handbook has more of our policies.
